UVC light kills the coronavirus

Signify, a world-leading lighting technology company, and the National Infectious Diseases Laboratory at the University of Boston, USA, have conducted research that has demonstrated the effectiveness of Signify’s UV-C light sources in inactivating SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 pandemic virus.

Since the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, an associate professor of microbiology at the University of Boston School of Medicine and his team, has been working to develop tools to support scientific advancement in this area. In their research, coronavirus-inoculated materials were treated with different doses of UV-C (UVC) radiation and evaluated for the inactivating ability of UVC light to coronavirus under different conditions. The team applied a dose of 5 mJ/cm2, which resulted in a 99% reduction in SARS-CoV-2 viruses in 6 seconds. Based on the data, it was found that a dose of 22 mJ/cm2 results in a 99.9999% reduction of the coronavirus in 25 seconds.

“Our test results show that above a certain dose of UV-C radiation, the viruses are completely inactivated: after a few seconds, we could no longer detect the virus.” said Dr. Anthony Griffiths, an associate professor of microbiology at the University of Boston School of Medicine. “We are very excited about these findings and hope it will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19,” he added.

The UVC performance of the ViroFighter intelligent, autonomous UV disinfection robot has been tested in an independent accredited laboratory. The ViroFighter robot is certified to radiate 2.2 mJ/cm2 UVC light per second, enabling ViroFighter to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the air and on any object in its path in just 10 seconds. ViroFighter is an effective tool against fighting the coronavirus and can help to prevent the spread of any microorganism, virus or bacteria.
